Hey hi hello! So, today we are going to be talking about things that all vegans should know! Being vegan is so fun and so rewarding, but it isn’t always easy! It can be challenging, especially for new vegans. I have decided to compose a list of things that I didn’t know when I first transitioned to veganism, and I think you should know!

If you are not eating meat, you have to be taking B-12! B-12 is a vitamin that helps neurological function! This is a vitamin that is typically fed to livestock, so that when people eat the animal, they also eat the B-12. But since vegans and vegetarians do not consume animals, we are not getting B-12. But don’t worry! It is easily accessible! I personally purchase mine from target, they cost $6 for 250 tablets. You can either take a 500-1000mg pill everyday, or a higher dosage once a week.

B-12 deficiency is real and it is not fun. Here are some symptoms:

  • Fatigue
  • Lightheaded-ness
  • Blurred vision
  • Numbness of limbs
  • Depression
  • Psychosis
  • Irregular heartbeat

If you are not eating meat and experiencing any of these symptoms, begin taking B-12 immediately. If your symptoms do not get better within 72 hours, please visit a doctor.

When I first became vegan/vegetarian, I thought that the words “milk and eggs” were the only thing I had to look out for in an ingredient list

Little did I know, I was very wrong.

Here are some words that you have to look out for:

  • Casein (milk)
  • Whey(milk)
  • Gelatin(crushed up bones)
  • Red 40 (crushed beetles)

If you know of any more non-vegan ingredients, please leave them in the comments!

When I first transitioned to veganism, it was difficult for me to stay motivated. But one thing I found that was super helpful was educating myself.

Since doing this, I haven’t once questioned my veganism.

The movie that inspired me to be vegan was Vegucated. This is an awesome documentary on netflix, but it only addresses ethical issues. Once I watched more documentaries, like Cowspiracy and Forks Over Knives, there was no going back.

This is crazy important for so many reasons. First off, you need to know what your body needs. I honestly don’t believe there is a universal “How to Be Vegan 101” because everybody’s situation is different. So do research on the things that you think you need. For example, if you don’t know of any iron rich foods, google “iron rich vegan foods”. I could spend days telling you all everything I know about veganism, but quite frankly, I think I would bore you to death. No one likes to read about things they are already expert in.

Also, people are going to have a lot of questions! A lot of people are more curious about veganism that you would think. When someone finds out you are vegan, chances are they will want to know more! It is super cool to be informed enough to answer all of their questions!

5. Is It Vegan? APP!

This app literally changed my life. When I first went vegan, I struggled to read nutritional labels. It can just be overwhelming because there are so many words on some things. That’s when I found the Is It Vegan? app! Basically all you have to do is scan the barcode with the app and it will tell you if it is vegan!

But even better, it will tell you why it’s not vegan! So for example, I am not too strict with the “natural flavors” thing. 99% of the time they’re vegan, so I don’t stress about it. But, if you scan something with natural flavors in it, the app will be able to tell you specifically why it is considering it not vegan, so you can make the decision for yourself! It is free in the app store, but I am not sure if it is available in the andriod app store.

Thank you so much for reading! I hope you enjoyed and maybe even learned something! If you have any other important tips for new or even experienced vegans, please leave them in the comments!

Have a lovely morning, afternoon, or night!
