Why I went vegan at age 14 (and not for the reasons you would think)

When I first started getting ideas about making the big switch, I was concerned about two things: My health and the environment. Completely selfish, right? To be honest I really didn’t need the ethical part of being vegan. I knew consuming animal products was terrible for your health and that it was destroying our environment. I had seen the slaughterhouse footage released by PETA, and while I knew this was unethical and simply not right, considering we humans aren’t evolved to eat meat, but the ethics of consuming animal products just didn’t do it for me.

For me, the fact that eating meat, dairy, and eggs is pretty much a recipe for heart disease, obesity, cancer, diabetes, was more of a talking point. Plus the fact that A staggering 51 percent or more of global greenhouse-gas emissions are caused by animal agriculture (Worldwatch Institute). Crazy, I know. You would be surprised the amount of people who call themselves environmentalists until you bring up veganism. So no, not every vegan would throw them in front of a train to save a cricket. Just FYI.
