With the summer coming to an end and the skies beginning to darken, I can feel my mood slowly beginning to dim too. And I KNOW I’m not alone in this feeling.
If we are being honest, I’ve just been in a MOOD all week. I’ve been irritable, I’ve been snappy, I’ve just been in such a bad mood. I think part of it is related to the weather, stress, or maybe some planet is in retrograde or something.
I don’t know
But I really haven’t been the most pleasant person. But we can’t be in a bad mood forever.
Chances are if you clicked this post, you’ve been in a bit of a mood too. Lucky for you, I have some tips to get you through this!
Step One: Find the Cause
Sometimes we are just in a bad mood because of the weather or just for basically no reason at all, and you can’t really change that. But try to dig deep and find out the reason behind your bad mood. For example, I think part of the reason behind my bad mood was work stress. Once I was able to identify the issue, I was able to address it. Even sometimes finding out the reason behind your mood is enough to get you out of it. But don’t worry if you can’t figure it out! Sometimes we are just in a bad mood for no reason, but there are still ways to get through it.
Step Two: Feel Sad
I wish I could remember who first said this to me, but I swear it changed the game. I used to have a bit of a habit of forcing myself out of a bad mood, which doesn’t help at all. If you think you just need a day to lay in bed, watch netflix, and drink tea, do it. Skip school. Call out of work. Take care of yourself. Write, dye your hair, take a nap, whatever it is that you feel like you need to do, do it. It’s 100% normal (and necessary) to feel sad sometimes. Let yourself feel all your emotions and work through it.
Step Three: Don’t Dwell on it
If I’m in a bad mood, I tend to just listen to sad music and lay under the covers all day. While to some extent this is necessary, I feel like sometimes it just perpetuates your bad mood. Let yourself feel like shit for a while, but then get up and try to change things!
Step Four: Distract Yourself
Once you’ve worked through your emotions, go out and distract yourself! Make super simple, casual plans with a friend. Go out to lunch and then go home afterward. Or if you just feel like being alone, go out to a coffee shop and get some work done for an hour. Going out and being around other people is sometimes all you need to kick that bad mood
Step Five: Exercise
You don’t need to go out and run a 5k on a bad day. In fact, please don’t do that. Just go out for a quick walk around your neighborhood. Bring your dog if you have one. It is proven that exercise can really lift your mood up.
Step Six: Do Good
Go out and give back. Make someone happy. If it’s a cold day, go to starbucks and buy a bunch of coffees to give to the homeless. Go to your local animal shelter and play with the animals for a little while. Donate to your favorite charity. Seeing your actions making someone else happy is guaranteed to put a smile on your face.
Step Seven: Start Over
If none of this worked, tomorrow is a brand new day. Go to bed early and know that you are able to start fresh tomorrow. Close the curtains, put on some chill music, and get ready to be happy tomorrow!
