In a world this busy and this crazy, we can sometimes get lost. As much as most of us would like to say that we do our best to take a break from the craziness, deep down we know that isn’t true. Unless you are making a conscious effort to separate yourself from the world, sitting on your couch and watching Netflix for an hour isn’t going to bring you those “zen vibes” we all strive for.
So if you’re really serious about trying to feel more at one with the universe, here are some small habits that can make a big difference.
Get Out of your Head
Stop making mountains out of speed bumps. If we sit around all day thinking about a problem, it often becomes a lot scarier than it actually is. One thing that I find super helpful is to write down what you are dealing with and all of the possible outcomes. This is a good way to simplify the issue and clear your mind.
Learn to Say No
I am really still working on this, but it is something that is so necessary. If you want to really improve on your mental state and become more zen, you need to learn how to say no. I am a people pleaser. Even subconsciously, I will do a lot to please other people without even a thought of how it affects myself. I have never said no when my boss asks me to go in on my day off. I have never said no to going out with someone even if I really just wanted a day at home. Sometimes we need to take some time for ourselves. Don’t say yes to doing something you really don’t want to do just to please someone else.
Connect with other people around you. We are very social creatures and we need human interaction to feel happy. If you put out positive energies and connect with other positive people, not only will you make yourself happier, you’ll make everyone around you happier as well.
Get off Your Phone
I know I talk about this all the time, but it’s so vital to having a more zen lifestyle, so we shall talk about it once again! Whether you realize it or not, scrolling through instagram and twitter really can affect your soul. I personally believe that I follow only positive and uplifting people-people who inspire me to be a better version of myself. But that’s the thing right there. Social media can make us feel like we aren’t good enough sometimes. It’s really good to take a break from social media. I mute all of my social media and text message notifications(except my mom of course) on Saturdays and go out and just live my life. It is incredible the things you notice when your face isn’t in your phone all day.
If you were to read every single post on the internet about living a more zen or mindful life, I guarantee you will find meditation mentioned at least three times in every post. Wanna know why? Because it’s so important. Now I’m not going to say that you have to sit on a pillow and breathe for 21 hours a day. In fact, please don’t do that. I don’t think meditation has to be the standard crossed legged, palms up type thing that it is typically portrayed as. I think meditation is anything that clears your head for a little while. I personally do enjoy the traditional version of meditation. I use the headspace app, which I think is the best app ever. I’m not even being paid to say this, but I love it so much that I think you all need to know about it. I already did all the free ones a little while ago, and just couldn’t find an app that compared but also didn’t want to pay $100 a year for the full version. Then I found the most amazing thing. Headspace has an offer for students that is only $10 for a year! Ever since that, I’ve been into it so much lately. But I also find things like reading and writing very meditative and I do them just about as much as I use the headspace app!
Declutter Your Space
You can’t have a zen mind if your house is full of shit. Or your room. Or wherever you spend your time. If you’re the type of person who’s room is always completely clean and tidy, well first off, I’m very jealous. Secondly, feel free to skip this whole section! But if you’re like me and the pile of clothes in your room is almost as tall as the empire state building, then let’s have a chat. Not only is the actual act of cleaning therapeutic, but having a clean room will allow you to be so much more productive. Especially with the cold weather coming, it’s so nice to have a cozy little space to just zen out.
That’s all for today folks! If you have any other tips on living a more zen life, please let me know in the comments!
