How to Write a Killer Blog Post

Let’s face it-blogging isn’t easy. I know a lot of people on the outside think that it is all sunshine and rainbows and working 3 hours a week to make $100,000 a year. Well if you’ve been blogging for any amount of time, you’ll know that simply isn’t the case.

In reality, being a blogger is a constant struggle. It’s slaving over your computer for hours trying to think of an idea. It’s publishing a post you think is great and having it not get the attention you know it deserves. It’s being tempted to throw in the towel every single day.

There is one thing in blogging that is simple: the key to having a successful blog is great content. Lucky for you, I have thrown together a simple formula for writing a killer blog post every time and getting your blog the attention it deserves.

Step One: The Idea

If you don’t have a great blog post idea, then the rest of the effort you put into it is useless. Thinking of a good idea for a blog post is the hardest part, but the most important. If you’re stuck on this step, I have some tips for you

Get inspired

Visit some of your favorite blogs in search of inspiration. Never copy another bloggers work, but use their ideas to inspire some of your own.

Check the news

Get inspired by what’s happening in the world! If you’re a fashion blogger, check out the most recent celebrity event and write about it. If you’re a travel blogger, research the hottest travel spots right now and write about them!

I wrote a whole blog post on this topic so if you’re still lacking inspiration, check it out HERE!

Step Two: The Headline

Your blog post title is what is going to draw people to your post. There are MILLIONS of blog posts out there, so you want to make sure that people pick yours to read over everyone else’s.

You want to keep it short and to the point. Not only will this help with google search engine algorithms, but it will also draw in readers.

There are some keywords you can add to your headline that will perform better:

  • Guaranteed
  • Free
  • Tips
  • Tricks
  • Ways
  • Instantly
  • Easy
  • Bonus
  • Fun
  • Clever
  • Attract
  • Unique
  • Secret
  • Amazing
  • Stunning
  • Uplifting

Words like these will draw people in. They will let you reader know that you are providing them with contents that is unique, specific, and useful.

Step Three: The Post

When it comes to writing your posts, there are a million routes you can take. Some of the topmost performing posts are: List posts, photo posts, and how to posts

List posts

I personally find that list post perform best for myself and many others. List posts are often simple, straight to the point, and helpful. Most people who read list posts aren’t bloggers, but just readers looking for a solution to their problem

How-to Posts

How-to posts are also super popular. They are again, popular amongst non-bloggers just looking for an answer. If you’re looking for an example of what a how-to post is, you’re reading one! How to posts are often longer, more in depth, and take a bit more time to read.

Photo posts

Photo posts are very popular among fashion bloggers. Photo posts are usually about 75% pictures and 25% text commenting on those photos. I personally have never posted a photo post, but they’re a very effective way of promoting a product or outfit.

When you’re choosing your post type and the wording of your post type, you have to keep your audience in mind. For example, I know that most of the people who are reading this post are bloggers so I can talk about WordPress and SEO without having to explain what it is. But if I were to be writing about something travel related and threw in words like SEO and algorithm, they would need a quite a bit of explaining.

Now that you have chosen what type of post you want to write, let’s focus on the actual post! Some important things to keep in mind when writing your post are:

  • Keep it short and to the point, don’t just fill the page with something just to get your word count up
  • Have a unique voice-give your readers a voice they’ll recognize
  • Include photos in your posts to break up the text
  • Add subheadings to break up the text. No one wants to read a 10,000 word paragraph
  • Add social share buttons

Now it’s time to publish! Get your post out there to the world, promote the shit out of it, and sit back and look at all of your hard work!

Thank you so much for reading! If you have any other tips, please leave them in the comments! I would love to hear how you formulate your perfect blog post!

Love, K x

  1. Great post to help new bloggers stay inspired. The info on titles is so important. One thing I’d add is before publishing use a search engine optimization (SEO) plug-in to make sure your post is as searchable as it can be! You can write the perfect post, but if you neglect key words, headings, have paragraphs that are too long, etc., it will be much harder for readers to find it online. The Yoast SEO plug-in is super and really easy to use.

  2. I really need to start utilising photos more; my posts tend to be a wall of text. It might be worth going back over some of them and adding a few relevant images to them, especially as I have access to some photographers (my mum and daughter!)
    Totally stealing this tip!
